When I tell people who teach history, it always surprises me how the attitude is: "Oh, I hated history. I did not learn something valuable, just dates and facts." It makes me sad because History is the largest reserves to teach and no one should find boring. It's just wrong! I suspect the reason many people did not like the story was that teachers do not have enough to tell Iraq war timeline. Although I have taught Advanced Placement American history for many years to my true love is European history, especially the 1700s, 1800s, 1900-century. Before written language, our history, stored and transmitted as a storyteller. It is still the best way to teach it. The story is simply a collection of stories. Then teach it that way!
Fortunately, history is not the date centered as it used to be. I think it's much more important to know the timeline of history rather than a specific date. For example, all students should know this sequence of events: the Civil War, WW I, WW II, Korean War, Vietnam War, the Gulf War, Afghanistan, war and Iraq war timeline. Other historical events hung on this frame. For example: When did China become a communist country? It was after World War II and led to the Korean War.
In addition, students should be able to place Iraq war timeline within 25-50 years. For example, all students should understand that the war was in the second half of 19 century. The two world wars is what has happened in the first half of the 20 century.
